GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT TAKE AWAY COUNCIL POWERS ON NEW SUPERSTORES

10.28.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 14th May 2007

The government's Planning White Paper is expected to be published this week. It is also expected to scrap the 'supermarket needs test' and stop local authorities considering whether a new supermarket is needed when deciding on planning applications.

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson, Leslie Coman, is calling on the government not to reduce local councils' decision powers over huge new superstore developments.

Small businesses have come under increasing pressure from big out-of-town superstores, but the government is now considering removing the crucial tool of councils in defending our high streets.

"In a survey we conducted with residents during the local elections, many people highlighted their concern for the future of independent shops. If our Council cannot say 'No' to supermarkets when they are not needed, how will communities ever be able to stop them undermining our high streets?

"I am calling on the government not to scrap the 'supermarket needs test' and enable our local community to decide on these developments based on local need," said Leslie Coman.
